Avalanche is an important tourist location in south India. It is around 25KMs from Ooty in the district of Nilgiris, Tamilnadu. This area is surrounded by a rolling landscape with blooming flowers like magnolias and orchids. And during high water season, it is famous for activities like fishing.
The Avalanche lake was the result of the natural disaster that happened during the beginning of 1800 AD. There was a massive landslide that resulted in the lake that we see today, and hence as you can see, the name Avalanche.
The drive from Ooty to Avalanche takes one to a beautiful picturesque spot centered on a lake, especially when you go through the Lovedale and Ketti routes. I am sure you will make numerous breaks just to take those pictures of the winding roads and view from there of the green carpet on the mountain.
The lake is situated in the middle of the place considered as a sanctuary with a variety of wildlife and offers beautiful experience to visitors of this hill. The forest here is a habitat of wild animals like Tiger, Leopard, Gaur, Nilgiri Thar, Sambar Deer, Sloth Bear, Barking Deer, and Nilgiri Langur.
Nature attracts many trekking enthusiasts here to have fun on the various trekking trails, the most popular one being the trek along Bhavani River. Oops, there goes my another alphabet for tomorrow!!
Do not miss the trekking path up to the adjoining hills from where you can enjoy the Eagle’s eye view of Ooty.
Due to the number of visitors, the Tamilnadu Forest department in Nilgiris has come up with an initiative to promote eco-tourism.
We visited the Avalanche Lake, Ooty in the month of August 2012.
As you can see, the water level was really down. This hill is not a place where you have buildings and concreates everywhere as in the metros or urban areas. You have trees and forest with many wild animals around here.
So, not much of deforestation around. Yet, if the water body is reducing even in locations like this, think. Why does this happen?
What can we as a human being contribute to this planet?
My theme for the April 2019 #AtoZChallenge is blogging about the rivers around the world, and mostly in India. Let me see if I can make it through all alphabets.
