Falgu river, a river flowing a foot below the ground. Or should I say Hidden River? Interesting? Unbelievable? Well, you will once you hear about the history or the mythology surrounding the river. The river has to flow without showing her face due to the shame or the curse she got from Maa Sita.
Falgu river in Gaya, in the Indian state of Bihar.
As per local saying, even today, it’s a geological mystery that this river cannot hold water even during rainy season. Yes, even when it is flooding on all other rivers around her, the water from rains will vanish in a short time here.
Not just that, the water is just absorbed like a sponge and flows just below the surface. Even in summer, you can find water just in few feet below. And that is how many do the Pind Dhaan here.
Here is the history from Wikipedia and other online research. Lord Rama along with his wife Sita, came to Gaya to perform the sacred rites for his father, Dasaratha. In Hinduism, the last rituals are very important. Repaying debt to ancestors is as important as to God.
We believe that it is intended to nourish, protect, and support the spirits of the dead in their pilgrimage from the lower to the higher realms, preceding their reincarnation and reappearance on Earth.
When Rama was bathing in the river, Sita was sitting on the banks. Suddenly, her father in law – Dasaratha, appeared out of the sand. While Sita was astonished, he asked for the Pindam, saying he was hungry. Sita requested him to wait till Rama returned so that her Husband can fulfill his duty of providing the Pindam.
But on the refusal from Dasaratha, she offered the Pindam made out of the sand. He was satisfied, blessed her and left. She made this with the witness of a Tree, Falguni river, a cow, a Tulsi plant and a Brahmin.
When Rama returned, he started the ritual, but on noticing that his father did not arrive to collect the share he was wondering. By then Sita narrated the happenings on how he already visited and got his pindam and left satisfactory. But Rama was not able to believe this.
So Sita tried to get the witness. Unfortunately, all but one Tree lied. Due to which, Sita cursed them. The Falgu river got the curse that she will never hold her head above and should always be flowing below the ground with head down.
Hence it is still believed that the river does not have water on those vast river bed, and just filled with sand dunes.
So, whether it is right or wrong, or true or false about this history, I am not sure. But there are certain things beyond science. We will understand once we have the answer.
For me, the lesson here is not about how a river was made to vanish. But it was about how to live – Live an honorable life.
Do NOT lie!
