Luni river is one of the great rivers of Rajasthan, the land of Maharaj. The river originates from the Aravalli range in Ajmer. The river actually crosses the Thar desert and reach the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. It is one of the rivers that flow through the west of Rajasthan which is otherwise a vast desert.
Even though the river is called as Sagarmati near the origin, it changes to Luni river after meeting the Saraswati tributary. The name Luni is actually derived from the
The word Lavanavari means Salt River. The high salt content of this could have resulted in getting this name. Luni does have freshwater during the first hundred kilometers but as it reaches Balotra in Barmer, the water starts to turn saline from the rich salt content of the surface it flows on.
What is your first impression when you hear of Rajasthan? A state mainly known for the Mahals, Maharaj and Camels. Hot weather and desert. Right?
Do you know that Rajasthan has more than 20 lakes? Don’t believe me? Ok, head to Rajasthan official website to know more. And Luni river is the only significant river south of the Aravalli range.
While I was trying to source information on this river, I did find it very difficult. But I learned an important aspect by reading a series of posts on
The initial posts like 6 years before starts by appreciating the water flow in the river, and slowly as I reach this year it ends saying there is not much water. It is a harsh truth that we are running out of resource just in front of our eyes. Also, this river during flood situations widens its path and affects the inhabitants on the bank.
Currently, there are two dams mainly for the irrigation projects along this river. But, how reliable can this river be which has flash floods in rainy season and runs dry in summer?
And in 2006, the flash flood actually affected many people living along the bank. And since most of the year like in Summer this river is dry, there is a huge danger from the encroachments.
We should remember that if this continues, we will be heading back to the olden days of searching for wells across the desert to fetch a pot of water!!!
My theme for the April 2019 #AtoZChallenge is blogging about the rivers, mostly from India. Let me see if I can make it through all alphabets. You can find all my #AtoZChallenge posts here. Interested to know my next destination starting with letter M? Try commenting your guess, let’s see.
