In “Money I – The Angels and Demons in our life” we saw why we should not be behind the money. And we saw why pitching the kids against the rich is such a dangerous trend.
Instead of saying Rich is the enemy to kids, teach kids about the Art of Making Money. It’s sad that in our country every rich people is looked as if they took away others money.
The word corporate is so abused in India that it became a symbol of cheating and corruption. Every kid should know that not every rich people is rich because of cheating and amazing wealth from common people.
If you love your kids to be rich, the first thing to do is to talk about the achievers in each field and their good qualities with your kid. Such discussion could trigger a search in him and slowly they will start finding answers themselves.
Tell them clearly about the 3 categories of people that coexist in this society.
- The ones who struggled and made it as rich today are the ones we keep talking about.
- There are a few others who also tried, but could not make it and no one notices them.
- And there are many others, who neither tried and nor struggled, and this group is the one that makes the most noise on others being rich. These people are to be ignored.
If you do notice someone from the 2nd category, ask them, and they will tell you all their struggles and how difficult it is to make it to the top.
Why do you think we have the majority of the population looking only for a 9-6 job? Any job, any domain, irrespective of what he did in university. Academics have no relation to the work they do.
The reason is, you get a regular income. There is no tension about running the company or answering the investors, fighting your competitors, and it’s mostly morning to evening sort of work. You close your work in the evening and you are done.
Most of all, we presume a permanent job is safer, whatever that permanent means. I used to joke to my kid sometimes saying the following phrases
No study No money,
No money No wife,
No wife No life.
Think about it, in India no parent want to marry their daughter to a guy who is not settled, who do not have that permanent job. Are we not on the same boat?
And every son & daughter should be and is taught on how to be financially independent.
Right from our childhood, we are being told to do what is SAFE. And like a parrot, we pass on the same thoughts to our kids.
Kids do mistakes, and they should do mistakes. How else do you think they will learn?
Let them do mistakes when they are a kid because we parents are there to correct and take care of them. But imagine, if they try the same after they are grown up & independent? Those mistakes would be costly. So, it’s always good to allow them to do the experiment when we are here.
In fact, that itself is a sort of safety net for them, right?
Do not pounce on the mistake they do. Rather learn to appreciate the kids for the trials they made, and point out how they can avoid the mistake. Take it as a live experiment.
Because, if you constantly find faults on kids they will stop venturing into new areas. They will just be happy with what comes naturally to them. Even if nothing comes naturally, they will just stay there with no progress.
It’s good to be safer, but it’s equally important for kids to experiment too.
Have you noticed who complains about the rich being corrupt?
It’s mostly those who do not invest or do any research for starting a business and running it. Those who have never tried it in the first place, will easily comment and make fun or blindly wipe it off as saying it as all by crooked means he became rich.
Only those who really tried to establish a business or sell an idea knows and appreciates the other entrepreneur.
In an urge to make our kid top in the school and be competitive, we are missing the key ingredients that are important for the kid’s future. The more you pamper the kids, the more relaxed they would be. Allow them to experiment into the new areas to break their own comfort zones.
Many times, you can see that the person who keeps taking the risk and hopping jobs reaches the top of the pyramid sooner. Of course, it’s a long debate to talk about things like loyalty etc. Keeping aside those if we consider what’s happening in the market, it’s true that such risk-loving people grow faster than one that works within their comfort zone.
Once you are used to your comfort zone, then it’s too hard to come out. And remember, all excellence is achieved only by those who came out of the comfort zone.
Let them Explore
Also, instead of always saying your kid to play safely without risk, teach him how to handle the risk and excel. Show them the importance of planning, and make them aware how they can reduce or completely avoid the risk by prior planning.
Coming back to the studies, if you look back to your own school friends, you will realize that not all the first desk or the top kids are doing very well. At the same time, not all the backbencher is struggling for life. Yes, true – our teachers would have said those of us at the back bench that we are fit only for laying eggs! But it’s only to motivate you to improve, if only we knew this back those days.
So, if your kid is one of those back-bench kinds do not lose your heart.
If you identify early that he is not much interested in studies, then it’s time to start concentrating on other talents of your kids. I know it’s easier said than done.
But at least remember that not all is lost.
I am sure each of us is convinced that Money is important. But teaching the kid about the importance of money is just not enough. You should make sure they feel comfortable to make money.
Let them know that earning money is an art. Let’s make them learn the Art of making money.
Finally, remember this. Richness is measured not with the amount of money one has, but the amount of happiness one has! So, balance your life with health & wealth.
That brings us to yet another interesting topic – work-life balance. Obviously, after the Education and Money, comes the Work-life balance. So is my theme too.
Yes, let’s catch up again on the next topic soon.
Happy Earning, and Happy Spending!
