A small village near Chennai, India.
They both were born and grown up together. They were together from day 1 of their journey in this earth.
Little she knows that it was her brother who saved her life even before she was born. Yes, their parents planned to abort when they came to know about having a female child. But his presence along with her is what made them change their mind.
Like every other sibling, they had fought never-ending fights. But whatever happens, he will never let go anything for his sister. She loved him more than her mother. Any problem she ran straight to her brother.
Her brother always wants the best for her. So he uses to spent a whole evening in the shop to pick a great greeting card for her younger sister. Be it Diwali, or her birthday or any festival he will not forget.
She too will wake up in big expectation about what card her brother gifted her for that festival morning. The alarm may forget to go off, but she will not forget to check below her pillow. Yes, that’s the favorite place where she can find her brothers love, Greeting Card.
And all those cards always had two kids in it. She saw herself & her brother in there. She knows, he does not want to leave her alone.
Days went by.
They witnessed many relatives coming to their home to invite for their son’s or daughter’s marriage. And they both will be very happy with such invitations. Because it could only mean one thing. Enjoyment – School leaves, long journey, sweets, and friends.
Yes, their parent will take them to every other wedding of their relative and they spent hours talking about their life.
The fine day came in their life. She got married to a person. On the day she had to leave her home, she did not talk a word to her brother. All they both did was to stare at each other for minutes and communicated with eyes.
He felt the fear in her eyes. The usual fear in the eyes of the girl who moves to a new place, with new people. She hated and cursed the whole custom. Its even worst for her. She needs to move to the US right after marriage.
Initially, she felt very lonely in the US. The only relief was the internet – Yahoo Messenger and chats that made her feel at home with some talks.
A couple of years went by. She delivered a baby. But could not visit her mom’s place due to her family situation. Years passed, and she got used to it.
Then the technology moved on, there came the FaceBook, WhatsApp and other communication channels. And she was thanking God for giving her chance to contact her brother whenever she wanted to see.
That too got used to after years and now its mostly good morning messages.
She is very happy. Finally, she returns to India for visit. He was so happy to receive her after so many years. He & his whole family arrived at the Airport.
There was the announcement about the arrival of the flight.
He could hear his own heartbeat. Excitement, anxious, everything put together, he was wondering if his sister would have changed completely. Will he be able to see his own sister? Or the US returned Indian.
He hated to wait. He waited for endless years, but the last few minutes was like hell.
Finally, here she comes. As beautiful as he has seen in her marriage.
He was frozen, could not utter any word. The last time he saw her was in her marriage, 20 years ago.
She came near to her brother, smiled. He could see the same happiness in her eyes.
She took the Greeting card in her hand, placed it in her brother’s hand.
He opens it. And see it.
Two kids fight in there. The boy was throwing snowballs on her.
He saw her. Both cannot control their tears, and hugs each other. They have been together for 2 decades before being apart for 2 decades.
Time & Distance can never change the true sibling’s love. Will it?
I know this is just a story, but this is actually happening in many families now. We often do not appreciate the love when we are together. Someone said correctly, the real value of something is realized only in its absence.
Do keep your mobiles aside. Take your eyes from the screens.
Talk to your siblings, friends, and family. For, you never knew how long are they going to be near you.
Especially in this world today, not all are gifted to have a sibling!
You should be proud & lucky if you have one.
Dedicated to all those “old” siblings living distance apart and longing to be together again as they used to be in their kids days.
