If I ask 100 people the question on if they like to go with the crowd or to stand out?, I am 100% sure most of them will answer the later. Especially we bloggers. What is the point to have a replica of a famous website? Don’t we need to be famous by our own uniqueness?
But do we really work towards this? I am not saying every bloggers are same, but its harsh reality that there exists such group.
Few may even be following the crowd even without realizing that they actually are. This post is mainly to bring awareness to such people. Hopefully, they find some help here.
Who said having options are always good?
Many bloggers are out here in this digital forum. Many advises floating around. Some are really good and we immediately follow.
But remember that these advices are only to provide insights to you. The final decision makers should be you. For me, a real helping guide/post should never have direct answers in it. It should ignite the search for answers in the readers. It should make user aware of possible options, pros, cons and make the reader decide himself. The success of such post should be to make the reader the real decision makers.
We see many step by step procedures describing how to do what we are looking for. But in this world the many same things can be achieved by many different options. When we see options, we all start behaving like the kids in the candy stall.
Imagine a kid crying in want of candy in the candy store. You keep ignoring the call to buy, he/she will keep screaming. But the moment you say “OK, Go and choose what you want” – hell will go lose. Kid will be staring at every candy bottles with no idea to choose the one he/she wanted. The fear of losing the ones he/she cannot choose will block his/her mind to think , decide and pick one.
That is exactly what happens when we bloggers try to achieve some functionality in our web sites and end up with tons of themes and plugins doing similar functions in front of us.
Making decision to choose right.
So, which one you choose? and How?
The one with the most popularity? Or the one with the least?
You want to add a “Share” function to your web site and search for a good one. Chances are that you will never run out of search results from google if you search.
Let’s assume you ended up clicking some random page. The page suggests you to use a ‘X’ plugin, and describes the how-to in order to optimally configure the same.
You get back to your site, and do search for this plugin. Chances of you getting gazzilion results in the page is very very high. Its time to decide. What is your reaction? How do you decide?
I am sure you will never look at those less utilized or the plugin with less than few hundred installs. Which basically reflects the fear that we all have. Yes, probably this plugin is worthless hence not much install. We may be right too.
High probability is – you are the one who look at the most active installation of that plugin.
There could be many advantages of choosing that too. Because it has certainly gone through rigorous testing on various sites with different themes. Certainly a good point. So we believe it to be good, reliable and most importantly my fellow bloggers are all in that direction.
Now, don’t you think there is a big negative impact due to this?
The very fact that the plugin is so famous and has been actively used in many websites should highlight some draw back to you. Didn’t it? Do you miss something?
Yes. It looses the unique character that a site should have. If you are using the same plugin with same defaults you will end up to be one in that million installation.
Am I saying not to use popular plugins?
But It was again me who said we are right in not choosing the least popular plugins.
What is the answer I am trying to convey you by this long post?
Haha, I can hear you screaming at me. But I am only doing what I promised I will.
Remember I told in the very beginning that the purpose of a helpful post should be to make its readers start their search and get answers. Not to reveal the answers.
Now, my job is over.
Over to you, start thinking. Act wisely.
Hey wait, where are you going? Oh, to search for answers?
Hint: Knowledge of customization.
Good luck, Happy Blogging !!
