Charlie Chaplin. Laurel and Hardy.
The names we can never forget. They have made millions laugh, more importantly, without offending anyone. Without degrading others or their beliefs. While the former made fun of himself, the later made fun of themselves.
Let me look at my own home back here, in India. There were comedians from 50s and 60s films who were great souls not just on screens but also in real life.
The Charlie Chaplin of India, N.S.Krishnan, his comedy was not just full of creativity, but also with social messages. He did not pull any one legs or degraded others to make people laugh.
There were plenty like him – T.S.Balaiah, Nagesh, Manorama, Chandrababu to name a few. Then the next generation had like Goundamani & Senthil combinations. They were more like the Indian version of Laurel and Hardy. Making fun of themselves.
Then came people like Vivek, Vadivelu, Santhanam etc. While Vivek did offend few, he was still called as Junior NSK, because of the social messages (Karuthu Kandhasami!!!) in his comedy. Vadivelu is ruling the memes world today.
But today, there is no comedy without degrading or offending others people, others belief. Making fun of others beliefs is the trend now. Offend, and then expect the audience to tune to their comedy, rather than they tune to audience.
There are many comedians who make fun of others work – be it a musician, or an artist or an singer or politician. Well they don’t even spare gods and traditions, so I am not surprised.
Their success is the hate or bias in the hearts of the audience. They just play with that. If they know the area they perform is with crowds with certain bias, then they use it to gain more claps and money!
I do not want to make a blanket statement. And not all comedians are bad and not all their comedy is in that perspectives. There have been good comedies that were enjoyed by the same person who was actually made fun of in their comedy.
But what is concerning today is the increase in the trend to pull the legs of others creators – be it human or the one who created him. Looking at the audience response, maybe that is what people like now. The taste of the people have changed such that if someone falls they will laugh and not help them.
This was fine as long as the artist and the audience was inside the four walls. People who enjoyed such comedy was the one who made it to the show.
But, today in this technology world, there are millions of videos called candid or just for fun and if you watch closely most of them are making fun or degrading others. Oh, please do not be offended, or you will labeled accordingly.
Recently, I see more of such news. And one tweet from Alex caught my eye.
An article from Dr. ABJ saying tolerance to humour is essential. (Yes, but where is the humour in today’s such comedy?) He is a great soul, and he took it light when someone degraded him. That is why he is ABJ.
Since I have quoted a tweet from Alex, do not get the bias that I am talking against him. I have seen his comedy and even posted a positive blog on Alex in Wonderland show.
But I do not believe that he would have said same if the comedians were degrading and making fun of his parents, or colleagues etc.
It may be a freedom of artistic expression. But if you cannot perform a show without hurting others then you are no way a creative artist.
And, before I end this, if you thought I am against the artists creativity, then you are mistaken. Being an artist myself (!!!), I know how difficult it is to come up with content. On top of it, if you start thinking of what “they” will think, what “others” will think etc. its a nightmare for creativity.
But, at the same time, I also want to say, what you sow you shall reap.
I mean, if you want to fill in the hearts of next gen with such filthy thoughts who can stop.
I only wish that each of these Comedians take some responsibility and be creative to make people laugh and help in keeping the society together. Help in blossoming some fragrance of love in the hearts of their audience and not the other way.
But if you comedians are only behind money and want to use the hate of one section against others just to make some living, who can stop.
Go ahead, and if you think of doing something good back to the society that made who you are, be more responsible.
Comedians, Stand up. And be responsible.
