It starts from the Ural Mountains near Mount Kruglaya and flows south to finally reach the northern coast of Caspian Sea.
The total course of this river is about 2,428 kilometers, it is the third-longest river in Europe after the Volga and the Danube, and the 18th-longest river in Asia.
At the beginning of the Ural flows from North to South, and meeting the same lofty plateau Kazakh steppe, turns to the North-West, the Orenburg changes direction to the South-West, Uralsk the river makes a new sharp bend to the South and in this main direction wriggling then to the West towards the East, flows into the Caspian Sea.
So, only the upper stream of the river is truly shared between Asia & Europe. Once it crosses Kazakhstan, it’s actually only on Europe.
The snow melting from the Ural mountain results in filling up the streams of all these Ural rivers. As we saw in my Caspian Sea post, this river is also used as a pipeline to feed water to the Oil Industry surrounding the river.
So, with such a vast streams, filled all through the years and plenty of fish and other species is this all good for this river? It may look like.
But to our surprise, this river is also not exempted from human interference. Recently, as recent as a few weeks back, there has been news of a huge pile of dead fish on the river near Atyrau in Kazakhstan. Exactly near the delta region where it empties into the Caspian Sea.
Unfortunately, this is not new, from the last December, there have been reports of more than 120 tons of dead fish in such incidents. What could be the root cause is not a million dollar question. I am sure we all know. It’s the pollution from different sources.
Some quote this to the industries nearby, some say it could be cold water due to severe winter. Ha, whatever the reason, all these are a man-made disaster is anybod guess, right?
My theme for the April 2019 #AtoZChallenge is blogging about the rivers, mostly from India. Let me see if I can make it through all alphabets. You can find all my #AtoZChallenge posts here. Interested to know my next destination starting with letter V? Try commenting your guess, let’s see.
