First winter after my relocation to Italy!
I was excited to face the snow. I was searching for visiting those milky-white mountains covered with the snow in the Alps. And since I was new to the country, I wanted to check with my colleagues about the transport possibilities to Switzerland.
“Why do you want to visit Swiss?” asked one.
I was like, What are they even asking? Don’t they know its time to play in the snow?
“Why? Of course, to play and have fun in Snow!” I shouted in excitement thinking about the kind of appreciation I would get. But rather any smile, their facial expression changed. No, this is not good.
Almost all shouted in one single voice. WHAT?
For a moment, I was like – Did I say something wrong?
“Don’t look at me like that”, I continued. “I know we should visit Swiss if we want to play with lots of snow. Isn’t it?”
What followed was an interesting discussion.
Well, it is not just me. Many Indians think the same. I say this after the recent questions and queries posted by people on Quora.
So, I am wondering why we had such a perception. And I got the answer.
Yes, Why Only Swiss?
Here is what I think could be the culprit for such thinking.
We guys watch a lot of movies, to be specific, the Bollywood, Kollywood, Tollywood kind of movies.
And most movies in India are illusionary showing things can’t be done in real life – including the so-called duet songs 🙂
Only in Indian movies, the Hero can deliver 3 pages of dialogue. All after the 3rd bullet pierced his chest that was already cut by the sword!
And every movie had at least one song sequence in Swiss with those white snow as background. Hero and Heroine play in those snows, dance, and whatnot.
So, it has almost passed a defacto message that – If you want to see snow, you should go to Europe, and mainly Swiss!
And that is why even today we see more Indians queuing up for Swiss than any other country. It could be the same Alps, cheaper travel and even more snow in neighbor countries. But, no.
We are told by movies that it does not work that way.
After my relocation to Italy, I saw it in my own eyes.
I still remember the look I was given in my office when I said I want to go to Swiss in winter, to see snow. The whole office bounced on me on why should I go Swiss for that.
How true, I just returned from Val Chiavenna, Madesimo which is a paradise for skiers!
How did it all begin?
In the early 80–90s the movies used to have such songs on the snow scenes but all taken from the crown of India – Kashmir. After the terrorist attacks and their cowardly attacks, the place was isolated and most Indians do not want to travel there.
That is how I believe the focus shifted to Swiss.
And 2nd reason why we have more Indians traveling to Europe is, Indians started to follow the west. In the past, their only concern was to save for tomorrow, save for their kids, etc.
They seldom lived for themselves. There is a big shift in the thought process now, and hence we see more and more Indians traveling on vacation.
Yes. They start to live for themselves, spend money on travel, explore more than before. So, it becomes an obvious choice to fly to Europe, especially Swiss.
Next time you plan for that Europe visit, do your homework well.
Welcome to the world of Snow!
