In the last post “Work I – Do what you love“, we saw how doing what one love helps in reducing stress and keeping us happy.
Our elders rightly said that Work is worship and Workplace is Temple!
If we maintain the decorum of the temple in our workplace it would be a better place.
But is it always the case?
Haven’t we heard of Abusing? Harassment?
Do you think it’s only women that undergo sexual harassment? You are wrong. Its gender neutral, and just the percentage differs.
Do you think it happens only at low-level jobs? No. It can be found at any level of the pyramid.
It’s not always that the victim is a woman.
Recently there was a news about a reputed IT company firing their female HR employee for treating a male employee badly for something she did not like about him. The male has faced this about a year before, but after the recent verdict on section 377, he spoke up boldly about the lady and she finally has to lose her job.
No, we are not going into if the act related to section 377 was right or wrong or is it against nature etc.? Opinion differs and that is why its basic decency not to poke your nose in others business.
Ok, the guy was out of the company, and took the issue and got a justice.
Just imagine, what would have happened if he was still in the company, and try to escalate?
It’s possible that when you are in the company and face such harassments you naturally fall into a dilemma whether to escalate or not and what happens if you do?
And remember, it’s not the intent that matters when it comes to abuse or harassment. Even if you had no intent to hurt others, it can be viewed as one. So, extreme care should be taken not to cross the line.
Most companies are establishing the process for such escalation. But what use it is if there are retaliation treatment on the employee who blows the whistle?
Retaliation need not always be firing you from the job. It could be even avoiding you and not providing responsibilities for the projects, demotivating you, etc.
Such fear will stop an employee from speaking up. So, an organization following a process for the employee to speak up is just not enough. The success mainly depends on how the complaints are reviewed and how they handle the retaliation on the employee if any.
So, do you think you are safe because you work from home?
Hmm, maybe less probable but cannot ignore.
Anyway, what is this work from home? And why do corporates introduce this concept?
Working from home has many advantages for employee and employer as well. Remember, in yesterday’s post I was highlighting about how long my father used to commute for this daily work. It’s almost 4 hours. So, this 4 hours per day is lost just in travel.
Well, one option is to make sure you stay very close to your office. But it also means you need to either relocate to a different city or find an expensive house for rent. It is not always possible.
The other option is Telecommuting!
Work from home
Hence, in many countries, there is an increasing trend to offer work from home concept for their employee. This not only helps in retaining the good resource but also motivates the employee since he stays close to family. A solution where everyone benefits.
Another benefit is less carbon footprint. There is a big time spent on commuting to reach one’s office. With the increasing number of cars, less carpooling, the traffic is becoming a nightmare. This will also add to the commuting hours. So, work from home is an excellent benefit for a productive environment.
So, is it all pinky-pinky about working from home?
Do you think, it’s easy to work from home? Actually, it’s not so easy as you may think. When I work from home, I will be more careful and more available. I mean, do not take any coffee break as often I do in office.
Maybe it looks easy for those who are not sincere in working and thinking to spend personal time while doing so.
Jokes apart, in reality, it is not possible, and it’s equally, if not more, productive as working in the office.
The reason is simple and human. They fear that others may think that they are just relaxing and in an urge to make sure no one point fingers they will work more attentively. So, they make sure they do not even miss a single call on their work phone.
So, such consistent working by keeping yourself isolated from other, could lead to or affect you physiologically in long run. So, it is not always good to be alone when working at home.
Hence its always important to make sure you establish a comfortable home office before starting your work from home.
Is all green in Home Office?
Consistent working from home can even affect you physiologically. With no human interaction, it could lead to stress.
You may end up having quantity time with family, but less quality time.
I can understand what you think now.
“Hey, what are you trying to say.” Is this what your inner voice shouting now?
Well, I will repeat myself again. A good article is not the one that feeds you with the answer. If it does, it’s just biasing your mind with the thoughts of the author.
But it’s the one that makes you ask the right question and triggers a search in you to find the right answer.
Now, sit relaxed in the Temple of the workplace, and explore.
I wish you tons of luck.
