Ever since I wrote the post on Follow your passion for Success to follow you, I have heard different feedbacks from friends and bloggers. For and against, obviously.
So, I was always trying to respond to them but never found an opt time for giving my response. I believe that now it is time. What changed? Read on, you will not be disappointed.
One key misunderstanding about my post was based on the thin line of difference between a blogger & writer. Or maybe I was not clear enough.
Just because everyone is writing, does not mean all are writers. It is like saying that the DTP operator is working on a computer so he/she is also a computer professional. You see!
Most bloggers post their ideas and experiences. Be it about life or travel or even spiritual. For them, there are many platforms that offer free space to echo their thoughts.
And few passionate bloggers, start their own website to create a brand for them. It is an investment, it is the marketing they do for themselves to reach heights. So, once they achieve the heights they start monetizing it if they like to.
If they choose not to monetize, it has no impact on others. So, bloggers have a choice to turn their passion into money or not.
Writer Is Not A Blogger
But a writer or an author, on the other hand, is someone who invests his time and thoughts to give birth to content, a book. And why people miss seeing this as a professional is still a big surprise for me? So far, I have published 5 books, and four of them available on Amazon too.
Let me confess here, I am not good at marketing. Which basically translates me to an author of not-so-best-selling books.
But still, I have never written books for free. Let me be brutally honest here. I had faced people who ask me for free copies when they hear I have published books. Really?
Will people ask a free Tesla with Elon musk? “Hey, you have tons of money, why don’t you gift me a Tesla X so I can test your product?” Come on!!
Why people behave like this? Because the art of writing is not considered as a profession. In my opinion, writers are also partly to be blamed here.
You may have tons of passion to write, no doubt on that. But what is wrong if that passion was put to earn money? So, do not shy to sell it. [This is more of a note to self!]
Anyway, a cook with a full passion for cooking will be happy to cook free for friends. Do you think he would do it for a restaurant?
Life of Writer
Making money is hard, and especially if you are a writer. I am not talking about famous journalists and celebrities who also write, publish books. That is a different topic. They have already established themselves, have contacts and earn their living from their profession which is obviously not writing.
For a regular writer, even having an acceptance that he has a job of writing is itself a herculean task. Seldom people recognize that writing is also a profession.
Am I against doing anything for free? No.
Let me give an example from my own personal life. Back in 2000, when the desktop was upcoming in every household in India, I use to assemble computers. Free! My face will be filled with happiness the moment I put my hands on those CPUs and Motherboard. I was doing it as a passion and only to friends and families.
That does not mean, I start doing this for everyone and still do not claim any money. Doing that free for all only means I will kill the industry & profession of computer service engineers itself.
Have you seen any other professional doing things for free just because it was his passion? A plumber? A carpenter? Or even a Sculptor?
So, when you say you write for passion, do it for your friends. No harm. It is much better than doing it for peanuts to some professional houses. Why do I say this?
Do Not Underestimate Yourself
Recently I started following a few content writers pages on social media. And I am astonished to see the kind of offers. More than the offers, I am actually surprised to see writers jumping to accept and write for whatever they quote. Come on, are they so desperate?
One side we have people offering less than 0.5 cents per word and on the other, you have people offering 10 cents per word.
I am not bragging, but do you know I wrote a 1500 word article on Travel and for 150 USD? Yes, such offers do exist in this world.
It did not happen just like that. Several months of searching on the internet, pitching to many sources for paid travel writing are all behind the scene activities. What I found is amazing. There are several good-hearted people who have posted the links to reliable sources who offer money for writing.
Before you ask me in the comment, let me share the link. Head to the writers in charge right now, and start pitching your ideas. I strongly believe that your writing should be rewarded. Do not underestimate your writing and in the process – yourself.
I went through every other site and pitched to several sources. Fortunately, I succeeded with one. I made it sound simple, but you need to go through their pages, their targeted audience and pitch accordingly to win an assignment.
Maybe I will come up with a detailed post on How I made 150USD for a travel article. I am sure you are smart enough to figure it out and succeed.
Do Not Overcrowd The Bridge
Am I saying I would be making much money regularly? No. What is the guarantee that my next pitch will be accepted again? So, it is not a regular income and that is why making a regular stream of source for money is important.
For me personally, it is different. I have a profession. My passion for travel & writing brings me happiness. If it also brings some money, it is a bonus. Even if my passion yields an excellent article that was not accepted by any sources, it is not going to lie wasted. I have my own travel blog and the article finds its place in there.
Awesome, right? Yes, why should I give it free?
Who am I to say how much you should quote or demand? It is an open world and survival of the fittest is the secret here. So, there are always new kids to the town wanting to get some exposure. And write for whatever small amount of money they are offered. I do not blame it. We all passed that bridge. The word “PASSED” is important.
Kindly do not keep spending more time on the bridge and continue to write for free that will negatively impact the professional writers.
This is exactly the reason why I stress you not to give away your writeup for free. It not only harm you, but also other prospective writers.
Let our writer’s tribe thrive.
